With Fall’s temperatures finally taking charge and pumpkins popping up on porches everywhere, we set down our margaritas and summery ales and began the search for a cocktail to appropriately reflect the changing season. Fortunately, we once again found Mike Martensen, Barman Extraordinaire and proprietor at The Cedars Social. Rather than running with our idea of dropping pumpkin pieces and vodka into a Vitamix and seeing what happens, Martensen took a more logical approach and completely ignored our idea. Instead, his recipe for the Autumn Flip salutes the pumpkin, but contains soft, sweet notes of vanilla along with the depth and kick of bourbon.
“I like the approach and preparation we take with it, it’s got a little complexity,” Martensen says. “But secondly, it’s seasonal – who doesn’t want some pumpkin and bourbon topped with nutmeg right now?”
It’s a good question, and one that may be difficult to answer.

- Yield: 1 Drink (1 Servings)
Mike Martensen's ode to Autumn in cocktail form.
- 1 Ounce Bourbon
- 1 Ounce Vanilla Syrup*
- 1 Egg
- 3 Ounces Pumpkin Ale
- Nutmeg For garnish
- 1 Cup Granulated Sugar For Vanilla Syrup
- 1 Cup Water For Vanilla Syrup
- 1 Whole Vanilla Bean For Vanilla Syrup
- *To make Vanilla Simple Syrup - bring water and sugar to simmer in a small saucepan until sugar is completely dissolved, then steep one vanilla bean, sliced in half, in the solution for 10 minutes. Let cool.
- Add all ingredients except the ale to a shaker tin, along with a handful of ice.
- Shake vigorously for 10 seconds, then strain into empty rocks glass.
- Add ale, then grate fresh nutmeg for garnish.
